Former Microsoft designer reveals Windows 11's dynamic wallpapers (download)

Microsoft had been working on the introduction of dynamic wallpapers for Windows 11, but it seems the rollout of this feature has now been cancelled. Sergey Kisselev, a motion designer who was part of the team at Microsoft, took to Behance to display the dynamic wallpapers alongside several still images.

In his post, Kisselev revealed that the Windows design team had explored a variety of dynamic animations and static wallpaper options specifically designed for budget devices. The aim was to improve the user experience on lower-end hardware while ensuring optimal performance. He shared a glimpse of some of the concepts, providing a valuable insight into the creative direction that had been under consideration for this feature. The post offers a fascinating look at the ideas that were being explored, even though they may not be implemented in the final version of Windows 11.

“A variety of dynamic animations and still images were explored for Microsoft’s low-cost devices, primarily targeting educational users. This work was part of the Windows Creative Direction Team’s efforts to celebrate a new centered signature composition for Windows 11, highlighting its centered Start Menu and taskbar. The designs were crafted to be adaptable for light and dark modes, allowing for flexibility in interpretation and execution.”

The animated wallpapers for Windows 11 were designed to complement its centred Start menu and Taskbar. Additionally, the dynamic wallpapers were tailored to adapt seamlessly to both dark and light modes. This design initiative was led by the Windows Creative Direction Team, with Kisselev serving as the designer. Notably, Kisselev had previously worked on the highly popular Windows 11 wallpaper, "The Glow."

Unfortunately, dynamic wallpapers are still not officially supported in Windows. Although there were efforts to introduce dynamic wallpaper support in Insider builds, it never made it to a stable release.

However, you can still download the static version. We've compiled a collection of static wallpapers for you, which can be downloaded from this Google Drive folder.

Note: These are preview images of the wallpapers and are just for demonstration purposes only. Please do not download them directly. Instead, use the designated download link below in the provided section.

What do you think? Could the dynamic wallpaper feature be on its way to Windows soon? While there are alternative options available, official support would undoubtedly be a welcome addition. Let’s wait and see what Microsoft has in store for future Windows updates.
